THE LOTTERY
JEWELLERY AS CURRENCY is a collective project in the form of a three-week artist residency between Amsterdam and Shanghai. Produced by Challenging Jewellery (CJ), an assembly of artists, thinkers and designers from the Sandberg Institute, the project emphasises material currency as the exchange of human interaction. Exploring value in material and immaterial terms, he artist residency is shaped collectively by incorporating performance with peer-lead workshops, and exhibitions with team challenges.
PART I: THE SLOW REVEAL LOTTERY
In part I of our Jewellery as Currency project, we channel a time tested cultural tradition to finance our group residency: the lottery. The lottery represents a temporary suspension of disbelief and extension of financial limitations into a dreaming space where the audience is granted permission to try on the feeling of ownership while donating to fund the residency.
PART II: SAN W GALLERY
In part II of our Jewellery as Currency project, we create a reward system based on non-verbal communication and gestures with the public inside the space of SanW gallery in Shanghai, China. Projects and pieces include collaborative sculpting sessions, gestural miniatures, filigree dialogue, sound cancelling jewellery, and a performance with a stone.
PART III: NOCC SPACE, TONGJI UNIVERSITY
NEO- CRAFT invited the public to NoCC SPACE for a special addition of NEO- CRAFT, IDEAL WORLD CURRENCY. This fully integrated system of philosophical thinking tools, allowing art producers to proactively engage with systems of power by utilizing expressive potential for personal and social gain, created a range of experiences for audience members through live speeches, informational videos, workbooks and takeaway objects. Each member of the audience received a NEO- CRAFT Souvenir Badge in exchange for reciting the NEO- CRAFT pledge with a partner. The badge is entitled A line is a sliver of infinity, is created by Marilyn Volkman and designed for NEO- CRAFT by Veronika Fabian.

Challenging Jewellery created a second instalment of the 'Jewellery as Currency' exhibition at San W Gallery (detailed above in part II). Projects and pieces include collaborative sculpting sessions, interactive gestural painting, filigree dialog, connective jewellery, and a performance with eggs.
