This practice, “making muffins” as it is sometimes called, is a holdover from a cat’s kittenhood. It is an action performed on the mother’s belly which stimulates lactation. It is seen as an act of bonding and expression of affection. In addition to the psychological and emotional needs this fulfills for the cat (and human) this has the practical purpose of marking territory.
